All-American Avoidance

Summary

Today we are talking about the show All-American which airs on the CW television network. The show has embedded several mental health themes into this show and we thought we should cover some of them. We discuss the way that mental health can manifest into physical ailments. We also discuss how sometimes we are avoidant with issues that bother us and we can end up in more pain because of it. Sometimes when it comes to the people we love we would rather avoid our issues in order to try to protect their feelings, but all we are doing is creating more issues because those feelings fester and transform into more problems. We also talk about how sometimes avoidance can cause us to take out our emotional issues on the wrong people and be misplaced completely. We discuss attachment styles and how they impact how we interact with the people around us and how we solve problems or avoid them. We also talk about how parents can impact our attachment styles and the attachment styles are usually formed within the first 24 months.

Can Sexism Be a Good Thing?

Summary

Tell Mikell got a question from his sister asking him is sexism always a bad thing. The question was sparked by a previous conversation we had in the “Women Drive the Message” Podcast. We have a conversation with a friend of the show Jessica regarding the difference between sexism and gender roles and whether or not there is ever an instance in which sexism is potentially a good thing. We discuss what the definition of sexism is and how socially we often confuse sexism and gender roles. We also discuss how overly done gender roles can potentially become sexist. We also talk about how men and women have communication issues and we should learn to communicate in a way that the opposite sex will not perceive as sexist.

Good fathers will move mountains for their baby girls, but could this potentially hinder their ability to find love as an adult? Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Gamestop!!!

Summary

Today we bring JG onto the show to talk about the epic battle between the hedgefunds and the retail traders over the Gamestop stock. JG explains what a short squeeze is and gives some background on the Gamestop controversy. We talk about why this type of financial revolution should matter to black people and elaborate on how the financial crisis of 2008 left black wealth cut in half. Buying Gamestop stock hurt some of the same predatory companies that took advantage of the common people during the housing crisis. This Gamestop short squeeze situation introduced a lot of new people to the stock market and so we also discuss where the financial market goes from here and how we as normal people can leverage our resources moving forward into the future.

Selfish vs Self-Interest

Summary

Today we are discussing the difference between selfishness and self-interest. These two terms are commonly used in the same breath however they have a totally different meaning. There are times when people will call you selfish based on you taking a genuine interest in yourself and your wellbeing. During this conversation we make clear distinctions between being selfish and being self-interested and how knowing the difference can free you from the guilt of choosing yourself. We discuss the difficulty with black families having issues with the word “no” and how boundaries can be blurry for such a long time. Sometimes you will lose people based on taking your own self-interest into account. No relationship should not be more important to you than your relationship with yourself.
